United Nations - The reports submitted by South Africa relate to SDG Goal 6 which is the dedicated water and sanitation goal, and coordinated through various UN agencies, which include but not limited to, UNECE, UN Environment and UN Water. As a multilateral platform, UNECE facilitates greater economic integration and cooperation among UN member countries and promotes sustainable development and economic prosperity.

In addition, UN Water will take the information gathered through UNECE and other coordinating UN agencies and produce the SDG Goal 6 Synthesis Report to provide input to Member States’ in depth review of SDG 6 in 2018. The report provides a joint position from the UN family on the global status on SDG 6 and other water-related targets.

STATS South Africa – responsible for coordinating the implementation of the 17 Goal agreed upon throughout South Africa.

Department of Water & Sanitation (DWS) - responsible for the implementation of Goal 6 – ‘Ensure Availability and Sustainable Management of Water & Sanitation For ALL’. In addition DWS must provide inputs to other Goals, lead by others, but have a water and sanitation component that requires support. Outputs from the SDG programme will feed into the DWS National Water & Sanitation Master Plan, the National Water and Sanitation Resource Strategy and other key documentation which re guiding the sector in relation to water and sanitation in the South Africa.

Sector : All Water Associations including Water Service Authorities, Water Utilities, National / Provincial and Local Government responsible for the delivery of water and sanitation services must address gaps identified in the Gap Reports that are developed annually by DWS and tackle these gaps in their respective Operational / Business Plans in coming years. The Sector in its entirety is responsible for closing these gaps and achieving full compliance by 2030. The Gap Reports will identify more specific roleplayers who play a crucial part in addressing shortfalls and their own specific progress will be monitored annually and make them accountable.
